Live blogging from Design Thinking: Mohawk Papers

Located on the confluence of the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers in Albany NY, Mohawk Papers is a family-owned business in its fourth generation. Mohawk is a generous supporter of AIGA, and we’re very excited to have reps here to assuage our paper-guilt.

Now we’re hearing about the initiatives already in place at Mohawk with a view to be an ecologically responsible company. Paper, as you know, is a highly energy-intensive, and a highly water-intensive process.

Little known fact: Mohawk is 100% powered by wind. You literally cannot buy paper from Mohawk that isn’t powered by wind. (And they don’t charge more for it.)

Ten years ago, about 25% of paper shipped from Mohawk was post-consumer waste… Now it’s over 80%.

FSC-certified (the first paper mill in the USA to be so), Mohawk has required for over 30 years that pulp suppliers prove that they are not endangering species, not harming ecosystems, etc.

Seriously folks, if you have to use paper in your designed artifacts, these are the kinds of quals you should be looking for.
